Everyone has heard the terms will and trust, but not everyone knows the difference. Both are useful estate planning devices with different purposes, and together they form the core of a complete plan.
A will takes effect at death and directs probate. A revocable living trust takes effect the day it's signed and — when funded — avoids probate entirely. Most Maryland families use both.
